Black Hat 2009: Breaking SSL with null characters

>> Friday, July 31, 2009

Update: The video of [Moxie]’s presentation is now online.

[Moxie Marlinspike] appeared on our radar back in February when he showed ssltrip at Black Hat.It was an amazing piece of software that could hijack and rewrite all SSL connections. The differences between a legitimate site and the hijacked ones were very hard to notice. He recently stumbled across something thing that makes the attack even more effective.

Amazing robot dexterity

posted by Caleb Kraft
filed under: robots hacks

Ishikawa Komuro Laboratories are doing some amazing stuff with robots right now. The video above starts out looking like a clumsy and somewhat failed attempt at dribbling a ping pong ball. Once it goes into slow motion however, we see the true action. This robot is dribbling that ball amazingly. Utilizing 1000 FPS cameras, it readjusts and hits the ball on every bounce. As the ball drifts out of the reach of the bot, suddenly we are struck with the lifelike motion. Personification can be a fleeting thing, appearing so strongly as the little bot tries in vain to reach for that ball, then disappearing again an instant later. If you really want to see some personification worthy of the crab fu challenge, check out their tool manipulation by a multi fingered hand video.

17-year old sues Amazon after they delete his homework

It seems that the Kindle’s cracked screens aren’t the only thing Amazon is getting sued about. This time, a 17 year old high school student is sueing Amazon because they deleted his homework, literally.

If you’ll recall a while back, Amazon, without notice, deleted digital copies of George Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm from every Kindle that had it. Well the 17 year old in question was reportedly using the Kindle to take notes on 1984 for a summer assignment. Once the book was deleted, so were his notes, leading the teen to bring forth such a lawsuit.

The law suit seeks not only punitive damages but also seeks to forbid Amazon from doing the same thing in the future.

Firefox 4.0 mockup screenshots showcased

Mozilla is hard at work on Firefox 4.0 and have today taken the time to show us a mockup screen shot of the browser’s new interface.

Does the interface look familiar? It should as it bares an uncanny resemblance to that of Google’s Chrome. I’m not complaining as I’ve become quite the fan of Chrome’s interface but Mozilla seems a bit unsure.

Below is a list of positives and negatives of the new UI compiled by Mozilla:

Positives:
- Save Vertical Space
- Efficiency/Remove Visual Complexity – Right now the tabs have to be connected to something. So we are adding an extra visual element for them to connect to.
- Shorter Mouse Distance to Page Controls.
Negatives:
- Breaks Consistency/Familiarity – Moving things confuses existing users.
- Title is MIA – With the space removed from the titlebar you only get the truncated version in the tab.
- Longer Mouse Distance to Tabs – Takes longer to mouse to a tab.
- Lost Space – Sandwiched in between the application icon and the window widgets you lose some space.

So, readers, what are you opinions on Firefox’s new look? Good? Bad? Leave it in the comments.

WiFi-less iPhones 3G Are Being Currently Manufactured for China

This time it’s on folks! Special iPhones are being manufactured for the Chinese market as we speak. By special we mean that the Chinese iPhones will officially not have any support for WiFi connectivity.

Foxconn is making the Chinese iPhone 3G and people say the phones lack an actual WiFi module. So it looks like Apple will not software lock the feature after all. By removing the module there’s no risk that some hackers will find a way to reactivate that WiFi feature.

Should we assume that Apple is ready to sell the WiFi-less iPhone 3G in China? Has the official agreement been signed?

Sony Ericsson Android powered XPERIA revealed?

At this point we’re not sure how much merit you should put into this rumor, but take it as you will. A Danish mobile phone site, Mobil, has recently gotten their hands on what they are calling internal documents showcasing an Android powered Sony Ericcson XPERIA reportedly codenamed Rachael.

According to the documents, this phone will feature a full 1GHZ Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 8MP camera, HSPA and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Other than that, no details were spoken of. However, if this handset is truly set to hit the market sometime we can expect a statement from Sony in the coming weeks/months.

Sony Ericsson Kiki Phone: Where’s the Keypad?

We can definitely see Sony Ericsson pairing its interesting Xperia design with an Android OS. In fact that’s a more than good idea. An Android Xperia could be the killer phone we’re expecting from Sony Ericsson.

But the Sony Kiki concept isn’t bad either. For one thing, this phone is really green so should we expect it to be really eco-friendly too? It’s so green it doesn’t even have any keypad. So how would one be able to interact with it? Simply press your finger against that glass right? That seems pretty logical but we have no official news from Sony Ericsson regarding this phone.

And what about the screen of the Kiki? Is it projected on the glass surface? It would certainly seem so:

The display seems to be made of glass, and the screen image appears to be projected onto this glass surface. It makes it possible to create a sort of depth in the screen image, and it looks rather exciting. We’re very much looking forward to seeing more of this.

Again, there’s no official Sony Ericsson position on the Kiki just yet but our interest has certainly been piqued.

Nokia netbook running Android slated for carries next year?

The world definitely has no shortage of netbooks with the majority of them running different versions of Windows or Linux. Android, however, has been shown to be very capable of holding its own when booted up on a netbook.

Nokia seems to think that the operating system is reading for primetime as analyst Daniel Amir from Lazard Capital Markets was quoted to have said the folowing:

In our conversations with ODMs, we have confirmed that Nokia is planning to enter the netbook market with a Google Android, ARM-based netbook that would be sold at carriers. Considering this market is dominated by the PC players, we believe Nokia could face an uphill battle to succeed in this market.

Take this with a grain of salt, even though Mr. Amir claims its cofirmed, until we hear official word from Nokia.

Nokia to Launch Android Phones Soon?

Frankly I am a little bit disappointed that Nokia hasn’t considered yet launching Android phones. Sure you’ll tell me that the Finnish company already has its very own OS. But is Symbian good enough at this point? While we’re waiting for the Symbian Foundation to create a totally new Symbian OS, other companies are getting an impressive Android market share. Android is getting hotter and hotter and we’re going to see lots of new gadgets powered by Google’s OS.

Nokia is finally seeing the big picture. It’s being rumored that a Nokia Android smartphone is in the works and it will be unveiled at the Nokia World conference in September. Nokia is looking to increase its market share in the smartphone business. Although it’s the number one cell phones manufacturer in the world Nokia is losing terrain in the smartphone sector. The company has lost 16% market share in 2 years. Compared to 2007 when it had 47% market share for smartphones at the end of 2008 that number dropped to 31%.

Is Nokia preparing a new flagship phone? Would you buy a N97 Android Nokia smartphone? We’ll have to wait a couple of months to find out if Nokia is indeed thinking Android thoughts.

Nokia: No truth to Android rumor

Yesterday we got word that Nokia was gearing up to launch an Android powered handset, but were the rumors true? According to Nokia, nope, not at all.

When notified of the rumors, a Nokia spokesperson said that there is “Absolutely no truth to this whatsoever,” and continued with “Everyone knows that Symbian is our preferred platform for advanced mobile devices.” You can’t really blame Nokia, considering how much money and effort they invested into the Symbian platform.

However, will their strong stance on the subject change? What about if/when the industry moves towards open source software?

Nokia N97 Available from Amazon for Just $599

If $699 is too much for Nokia’s flagship phone, then how does $599 sound? Amazon is currently selling the N97 for that price which is 14% less than the regular price. The phone will be shipped for free straight to your home and all you’ll have to do is decide what carrier to choose after purchasing the N97. Currently this is the lowest available price as no carrier has decided to offer this impressive smartphone for a subsidized price and Nokia isn’t running any sale today. Considering that Amazon has already dropped the price on the N97 we should assume that other hot Nokia phones like the E71 or the 5800 XpressMusic will have better prices soon so your favorite Nokia phone will be available for a cheaper price.

Nokia 3720 Likes Beer

We have already told you that Nokia’s 3720 is a more than resistant phone. It’s waterproof and dustproof and it will surely withstand a few shocks. And as you can see in the picture above it has no problem dealing with bear too. The 3720 likes beer and will pass any testing after being sunk in a pint. Sure it will not be able to walk in a straight line, although it probably would if it had any feet, but it will keep doing its business. The phone will come in September but we still have no idea how much it will cost. What we do have is a specs list for you:

  • Water and dust resistant (IP54 certificate)
  • Battery life: over 2.5 weeks standby time
  • FM radio
  • Integrated flashlight
  • S40 OS
  • 2.2-inch QVGA display, 16M colors

Nokia Takes a Hit at the iPhone 3GS

The N97 is definitely one of the best phones Nokia has launched during the last few years. And unfortunatelly it’s not anywhere perfect, is it? Neither is the iPhone 3GS, Apple’s latest handset. But you have to agree that overall, the iPhone is better than the N97.

In the mean time it looks like Nokia UK’s General Manager, Mike Loughran, thinks otherwise:

The new iPhone is an evolution rather than a revolution and for people trying to decide whether to get a Nokia N97 or an iPhone, it comes down to a decision on performance and value for money… The new iPhone seems to have the same design and colour, upgrading from a sub-standard two-megapixel camera to a still low 3.2-megapixel camera, and is probably a disappointment for many people given the high tariff and lifetime ownership costs.

Does this mean that you should choose a phone based on color and megapixels? Seriously?

Nokia 3720 Classic

Nokia has officially announced the 3720 Classic. As we have already seen last week this phone can handle quite a lot. It is waterproof, dustproof and shock resistant. The 3720 is made of very durable materials and the interior is sealed tight so nothing can interfere with the electronics inside.

Markku Suomi, vice president, Connect devices said:

Whether using it at the beach or in a dusty construction site, the Nokia 3720 classic has been specifically engineered to withstand the splashes, bumps and drops that come with the terrain. While the Nokia 3720 classic is tough on the outside, it is equally functional on the inside - a perfect choice for people who want a long-lasting and reliable mobile phone for any environment.

The phone will come with less than remarkable features like a 2.2-inch display, a 2-megapixel camera, a 1GB microSD card, preloaded Nokia Maps, a long-lasting battery and a LED flashlight. But then again this phone is made to withstand outrageous conditions so smartphone-like features will not be found in the 3720 Classic.

The phone will be available for around $175 when it will begin shipping this summer. That’s the full, unsubsidized price so you will probably get it for a lot less.

Nokia’s 7020 makes its way through the FCC

Originally thought to be only launching in the UK, Nokia’s 7020 has recently made its way through the FCC and gained approval.

As you can see, this phone isn’t exactly top of the line but is sure to be priced alongside other budget phones on the market. The 7020 is apparantly EDGE only but features a 2MP camera and internal display with no word on resolution or size.

There’s no telling what carrier this will be on as EngadgetMobile points out, there are no brandings to be found. However, once we hear of a price point and/or carrier we will notify you.
