>> Wednesday, September 30, 2009

BMW M1 HommageWhen we saw the BMW M1 Hommage concept we immediately began to ask when we were going to get a chance to see the production version. However, we might not get a chance to see it – at least not for a very long time.

A board member from BMW stated that they have no plans to produce a supercar that will be able to compete with the new Audi R8. They have decided to focus all of their attention and resources on green technologies.

Considering the contrast between sports car and race car engineering, embarking on such a project was a heavy task. Coupled with the limited production and tiny customer base, development costs were hard to recoup. Despite these hardships, several German companies still decided to create their own road-going Porsche 962, the most successful prototype race car of our time.

Laser triggered photography

FFU0B63FZG43RK5.MEDIUM

Popped balloons or bullets fired into apples, anyone can photograph with a quick sound based camera rig. Lasers have been used forever in motion detection. And even door bell chimes have been used before for remote camera shutter releases. No, [SaskView] wanted to go further and created his Laser Triggered High-Speed Photography setup, to photograph (of all things) milk splashes. We liked the simplicity of the project however; requiring no programmed microchips or overly complicated circuitry – rather he took a quick trip to the local dollar shop, used the amazing CHDK firmware, and he produced perfect results every time.

[Update: CHDK, not CHKD firmware. My mind must be elsewhere. Thanks jbot and agent smith]

Pick-and-place Lego prototyping

[Ned] tipped us off about his project for a class at Carnegie Mellon. Utilizing a Denso 6-AOF robotic arm they have built a rapid prototyping machine that uses Lego as the building material. LDraw, the open standard Lego CAD program, is used to build a model which is then translated into MATLAB files that the robotic arm can use for placement commands. Right now pieces need to be placed on a template for the robot to find and pick up.

It’s great that Lego pieces are used because they are readily available and inexpensive, but this type of precision robot makes the project unattainable for most tinkerers. Still, the concept is interesting and we could see an end goal being a more widely available machine. It’s not too much of a leap to image a RepRap type machine that takes internal measurements of a circuit board and the components, calculates inside case dimensions, then builds a prototype enclosure from common Lego

Arduino powered singing table

This musical Lazy Susan, or “Crazy Adam” was brought to us by students from MIT. It basically plays [Soul II Soul]’s “Back to Life” as it turns. In their words: “Through the interaction with the Singing Lazy Susan, we found the eating patterns and behaviors unique to each person, which reflect our personalities and interests. The dining experience expands to a new domain.” Are we the only ones who think this is silly? Not only is an Arduino overkill for this, how does this help reflect our personalities and interests? We know, someone will say that art doesn’t need to make sense, but this would just get annoying really fast. Good job coming up with an idea and making it happen. Please don’t bring that to our next office party. It is also worth noting that musical Lazy Susans aren’t exactly a new idea.

Multi-camera rig makes trees say cheese

redwood_camera_rig

[Nick Nichols] set out to take a photograph of a full redwood tree. Here’s the catch, these redwoods are over 300 feet tall and they’re not just standing in the middle of a vast desert. If the photo is taken from a distance, you will only capture the top part of these majestic beauties. How can you take the shot from close up? Build a custom rig to take multiple shots and stitch them together for a composite photo.

[Nichols] built the rig to hold three cameras focused to the left, middle, and right of the tree. The frame includes a gyroscope to keep the cameras steady. By lowering the cameras from the top to the bottom of the redwood they were able to capture 84 pictures to assemble the final shot. The result is featured in the October edition of National Geographic magazine. We’ve included the final picture and embedded a video of the rig in action after the break. Dean Kamen’s prosthetic arm

luke

60 minutes has covered [Dean Kamen]’s modular robotic arm. This thing is light weight, adjustable for different body frame sizes, modular, and eventually thought controlled. The system is currently functioning quite well, as you can see in the video. Current testers are controlling it with buttons under their toes, but the thought control is in the later stages of development. Sounds like science fiction right? You can see a monkey using a thought controlled arm to feed itself grapes, though we don’t think it is [Dean]’s arm.

Another cool feature of this arm is the fact that it changes its grip on your body depending on how much weight you are lifting. Lift something heavy and it grips harder. Though it has a lot of the same information, there is a little bit of different footage in [Dean]’s TED talk about the arm.

It seems to us, with microcontrollers becoming so cheap and accessible that we should be seeing more home made contraptions in this area. Are any of you working with prosthetics?

Jewelry Trend: Resin Jewelry 101

Resin jewelry is made from liquid plastic that turns solid when a hardener is added. Because of its versatility, lightness, and affordability, plus the introduction of easy to mix, low-odor products, resin’s popularity as a material for jewelry making has soared. Materials needed can be found at most craft stores.

Things you'll need:
  • Two-part epoxy resin
  • Disposable plastic cups
  • Craft sticks
  • Resin mold
  • Small beads, glitter, plastic stickers
  • Earring hooks or necklace bail
Step 1

Mix one part resin to one part hardener in a plastic cup. Stir with a craft stick for 2 minutes. Pour the resin into a second cup and stir with a fresh craft stick for an additional 2 minutes.

Step 2

Fill your resin mold halfway. Allow the resin to sit in the mold for 3 to 5 minutes for the bubbles to settle.

Step 3

Place any inclusions you would like in your finished jewelry into the molds. Small beads, glitter and plastic-coated stickers work well. Any nonporous item can be placed in resin.

Step 4

Finish filling the molds with resin. Cover the mold and allow to dry for 24 hours.

Step 5

Pop the jewelry pieces from the mold when the resin is dry by lightly pressing on the back. Glue your earring hooks or necklace bails to the jewelry.

Supply Spotlight: Jump Rings

Jump Rings are a very popular and useful connector used in jewelry making. They come in all different kinds of materials including silver, gold, brass, base metal, silver plated, and color coated. Jump rings also come in various different sizes ranging from 2mm to 1cm and above. Although it’s possible to make your own jump rings most people buy them fairly cheaply at jewelry supply stores in packages of 100 or more. They often cost from $1.50 to $3.00 per package.

How to Open a Jump Ring

The best way to open a jump ring is by pushing one end forward and the other in the opposite direction. This is so it won't distort the original circle.

You can do using a flat-head plier on one side and the tip of your thumb and forefinger on the other.
Or you can use two sets of pliers. Close the same way.

Gemstone Spotlight- Agate

A hard stone, usually within the range of 7-9 on the Mohs scale agates are found in all colors of the rainbow, although green and blue are quite rare. Agate is a variety of chalcedony formed from layers of quartz which usually show varicolored bands. It usually occurs as rounded nodules or veins.

Often tiny quartz crystals form within the stone and add to the beauty and uniqueness of individual stones. These crystals are called drusy (sometimes misspelled as druzy). Lapidaries often cut just the drusy from an agate and jewelers use these drusy cabochons as the main stone or as an accent stone in their jewelry designs.

Some named varieties are: moss agate, eye agate; and plume agate, which looks like it's filled with beautiful feather plumes.

Agate is a relatively inexpensive stone except for some varieties with unusual banded or scenic markings. In recent years, Montana agate has gained wide acceptance in jewelry and well cut stones with nicely defined patterns often exceed the price of some of the more well known gemstones. Plume agate is another that often brings high dollar.

Agate is found all over the world including: the Africa, Asia, Brazil, Egypt, Germany, India, Italy, Mexico, Nepal, and the USA.
Agate is the Mystical birthstone for September. It is also the birth stone for the Zodiac sign of Gemini. Agate is the accepted gemstone for the 12th and 14th wedding anniversaries.

Samsung SCH-W880 is now official; call it the AMOLED 12M

The Korean manufacturer has officially announced the 12mpx shooter we saw yesterday and granted, the device is a great cameraphone but how bad is it’s official name? Called the AMOLED 12M, the name leaves nothing to imagination and already reveals an AMOLED display and a 12 megapixel camera. Run out of fancy names already Samsung? Anyways, we already knew about the AMOLED display and the banging 12mpx lens but, going by the official announcement, the AMOLED 12M does seem a bit disappointing. We still get the awesome 3.3-inch AMOLED touchscreen, microSD expansion, Bluetooth, terrestrial DMB receiver, and HD video recording, but there isn’t a tiniest clue on inclusion of WiFi or GPS, which makes it an awesome cameraphone but a lousy featurephone in other areas. But if it’s imaging you want, the SCH-W880 should deliver it. The AMOLED 12M will make its debut in Korea (most probably on SK Telecom) early October. Microsoft’s Courier Tablet Appears Again; This Time It’s Running Windows 7

It looks like Microsoft is willing to leak as much info as possible about its future tablet. The Courier has been spotted again and it looks like the hot tablet is running Windows 7. We were certainly waiting for the Courier to run Windows 7. It’s not like Redmond has more OS ready to power up a tablet computer.

Microsoft is responsible for designing its own hardware just as it did with the Zune HD and the Xbox 360. The Courier will hit resellers sometime in mid 2010 which is probably when Apple’s future tablet will also be available in stores. Remember though that this is all based on speculation, rumors and leaked information. Microsoft will not comment on anything yet which is a clever move in order to keep us buzzing about the tablet.
